Is this a dental emergency?

When something goes wrong with your teeth, it is hard to know how urgent it really is. Use this quick guide, and if you are unsure, call us on 02 9030 0247, and we will tell you honestly whether you need to be seen today.

Call us straight away if you have:

  • Severe or throbbing toothache that will not settle
  • A knocked-out or pushed-out adult tooth
  • A broken tooth that is sharp, painful or bleeding
  • Swelling in your gum, cheek, jaw or face
  • A dental abscess, which is a painful lump on the gum, sometimes with fever
  • Bleeding from the mouth that will not stop
  • A lost crown or filling that is causing pain or sensitivity
  • An injury to your teeth, lips or jaw from a fall or knock

It can usually wait for a regular visit if you have:

  • Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food
  • A small chip with no pain and no sharp edge
  • A dull ache that comes and goes
  • A lost filling that is not causing any pain
  • Food caught between teeth that you can gently floss out
  • A tooth that has felt slightly loose for a long time

Emergency dental problems we treat

Our dentists handle the full range of dental emergencies for adults and children. Here is what each problem looks like, what we do about it, and what you can do before you reach us.

Severe toothache and tooth pain

Dental Check-up

A sharp, constant or throbbing toothache is your tooth telling you something is wrong, often decay, infection or an exposed nerve. We examine the tooth, take an X-ray to find the cause, and relieve the pain. Treatment may be a filling, root canal therapy or, where needed, removal.

Knocked-out tooth

Knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is one of the most time-critical dental emergencies requiring immediate attention. The sooner it is treated, the better the chance of saving it. We assess the tooth and socket, reposition and splint the tooth where possible, and check for other injuries.

Chipped, cracked or broken tooth

A fall, a sporting knock or biting something hard can leave a tooth chipped or cracked. Even a small crack can let in bacteria, so prompt care matters. Depending on the damage, we may repair it with bonding, a crown, or other treatment. See our pages on a broken tooth and cracked tooth pain.

Dental abscess and facial swelling

Dental Check-up

An abscess is a pocket of infection that causes severe pain and swelling, and sometimes fever. Left alone, the infection can spread. We drain the abscess, treat the underlying cause, and prescribe antibiotics when they are needed. Learn more about a swollen face from a tooth infection.

Dental Treatment

When a filling or crown comes out, the tooth underneath is suddenly exposed to bacteria, temperature and pressure. We can re-cement a sound crown or replace a lost filling quickly and comfortably, before a small gap turns into a bigger, more painful and costly dental problem.

Dental Check-up & Clean

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or infected to save and needs to come out the same day to stop the pain. We carry out gentle emergency extractions, including urgent removal of a painful wisdom tooth, and talk you through replacing the tooth afterwards if you wish.

Need Urgent Dental Care? Contact Hayat Dental Now

If you’re facing a dental emergency, don’t delay. Call us right away. We prioritise urgent cases and aim to provide same-day care whenever possible. Our experienced team at our Broadway clinic is here to manage your symptoms quickly, explain your treatment clearly, and help you feel at ease from the moment you arrive.

What to do before you reach us

A few simple steps can ease your pain and protect your tooth while you make your way in. Call us first, as we can talk you through exactly what to do for your situation.

Call and describe your symptoms

Tell us what happened and how you feel. We will gauge how urgent it is, give you advice for the trip in, and have everything ready for your arrival.

Look after a knocked-out tooth

Hold an adult tooth by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk, and place it back in the socket or store it in milk. Never scrub the root, and do not reinsert a baby tooth.

Rinse gently with warm salt water

A warm salt-water rinse helps clean the area, reduce bacteria and calm minor swelling. Spit gently rather than swishing hard.

Use pain relief safely

Paracetamol or ibuprofen, taken as directed, will help. Avoid aspirin if there is bleeding or an open wound, and never rest a tablet against the gum.

Apply a cold compress for swelling

Hold a cold pack wrapped in a cloth against your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. It eases swelling and numbs the area a little.

Bring fragments and your medication list

Bring any tooth pieces or a lost crown, and tell us about every medicine you take, including over-the-counter ones, so we can treat you safely.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

Find quick answers to common questions about our dental services, procedures, and patient care in our FAQ section.

We always take care of your smile

Yes. We keep urgent appointment slots free every day for dental emergencies. Call us as early as you can on 02 9030 0247, and we will do our best to see you the same day, settle your pain and treat the cause.

Our dentist is open Saturday mornings from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM and can see emergency patients during that time. We are closed on Sundays. If you have an emergency on a Sunday, follow the after-hours guidance above.

Pick the tooth up by the white crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. For an adult tooth, gently place it back in the socket if you can; if not, store it in milk. Do not reinsert a child’s baby tooth. Contact us straight away, as the sooner the tooth is treated, the better the chance of saving it.

A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt care to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, treat swelling or infection, or save a tooth. Common examples include a severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a dental abscess, facial swelling, and a lost crown or filling that is causing pain. If you are unsure, call us, and we will advise you.

Cost depends on what the problem is and what treatment it needs. An emergency examination, usually with an X-ray, lets us diagnose the issue. We then give you a written quote covering all costs before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises.

Most health funds provide some cover for emergency dental treatment, though the amount varies with your level of cover. We accept all major health funds and use HICAPS for on-the-spot claiming, so you only pay any gap. Our team can help you check your benefits.

Paracetamol or ibuprofen taken as directed will usually take the edge off. Rinse gently with warm salt water, and hold a cold pack wrapped in a cloth against your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time if there is swelling. Avoid aspirin if there is bleeding or an open wound, and never rest a tablet against the gum, as it can burn the tissue. See our guidance above for more detail.

Yes. We see children for dental emergencies and take a calm, gentle approach to help them feel at ease during what can be a stressful time. Eligible children may also be covered for treatment under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Yes. We open on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and keep time aside in that session for urgent cases. Call 02 9030 0247 as early as you can, as Saturday mornings fill quickly. We are closed on Sundays.
