You’re not alone

Dental anxiety is more common than you think

Feeling anxious about the dentist is one of the most common reasons people put off care. For some it’s a few nerves in the waiting room. For others it’s a strong fear, sometimes called dental phobia, that has kept them away for years. Both are real, and both deserve to be taken seriously.

Putting off care tends to make dental problems bigger, which can make the next visit feel even harder. Breaking that cycle usually starts with a conversation rather than a procedure.

What’s behind the fear

What makes people nervous, and what we do about it

Most dental anxiety comes from a few specific worries. Tell us which ones are yours, and we’ll plan the visit around them.

01

Fear of pain or needles

We explain how the area will be numbed and check you’re comfortable before we begin. If needles are a major barrier for you, we can discuss whether sedation is suitable.

02

Feeling out of control

We explain each step before it happens and go at your pace. If something doesn’t feel right, tell us and we’ll talk it through.

03

The sounds and smells

Headphones and the ceiling TV help block out the noise, and aromatherapy diffusers mean the room doesn’t smell like a surgery.

04

A strong gag reflex

We work in short sections, adjust your position and use digital 3D scans instead of impression trays where possible.

05

Embarrassment about your teeth

Whatever state your teeth are in, we’ve seen it before. You’ll get honest information about what we find, without a lecture.

06

Worry about cost

You get written costs before you commit to anything, so there are no surprises when you’re already in the chair.

How we help

A calmer visit, built around you

Small changes make a big difference when you’re nervous. This is how we shape every visit.

Start with a conversation

Tell us what worries you, what has happened before and what helps. We explain your options and give you written costs, and you decide in your own time. We’ve been patients ourselves, so we know how it feels.

Every step explained before it happens

We tell you what we’re about to do, show you any instrument you’re curious about, and only then begin. Knowing what comes next takes away much of the fear.

Comfort you can feel

Warm blankets, a stress ball to hold, your own music through headphones, or a show on the ceiling TV. Small things, but they make a long appointment feel shorter.

Small steps that build trust

If you’ve been away for a while, we often start with a check-up and clean before anything bigger. Each easy visit makes the next one easier.

What to expect

Your first visit, step by step

Knowing what will happen takes away a lot of the worry. Here’s how a first visit usually goes.

01

Tell us when you book

Mention that you feel nervous, online or over the phone, so the team knows before you arrive.

02

Arrive and settle in

Take a few minutes in the waiting area. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member with you.

03

Talk before the chair

We ask what worries you, what has happened before and what helps, and we go through your medical history.

04

A gentle look

We check your teeth and gums at your pace. X-rays or scans are taken only if they’re needed and you’re happy to go ahead.

05

A clear plan, in writing

We explain what we found, your options and the costs. You decide what happens next, in your own time.

Students and first-timers

Seeing a dentist on your own for the first time

Many of our patients are students booking their own appointment for the first time, sometimes after years without a check-up. We explain everything, keep costs clear and help you understand any health fund cover you have. We’re just across the road from UTS on Broadway.

No. Many of our patients come back after a long break, and our only interest is helping from where you are now. You’ll get honest information without a lecture.

What if I feel nervous during treatment?+

Tell us. We explain each step before it happens and go at your pace, and comfort options like headphones, the ceiling TV and a warm blanket are there whenever you want them.

I have a strong gag reflex. Can you help?+

Yes. We work in short sections, adjust how you’re positioned and use digital scans instead of impression trays where possible.

I’m scared of needles. What are my options?+

Will I know the cost before you start?+

Yes. You get written costs before you commit to any treatment, and we can help you check what your health fund covers.
