What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Our dentists will always look at whether a tooth can be repaired first, using a filling, a crown or root canal treatment. Removal is recommended only when the tooth cannot be saved, or when leaving it in place would put your other teeth at risk.

There are two types. A simple extraction is used for a tooth that has come through the gum and can be reached with instruments. The tooth is loosened and lifted out under local anaesthetic. A surgical extraction is a minor procedure used when a tooth has broken at the gum line, is trapped beneath the gum, or has curved or divided roots. It involves a small opening in the gum, and the tooth is sometimes removed in sections to protect the surrounding bone.

Teeth are most often removed because of deep decay, advanced gum disease, a fracture below the gum line, an infection that cannot be cleared, or crowding ahead of orthodontic treatment.

Our Tooth Extraction Services Include

From straightforward removals to more complex surgical extractions, our Sydney dental team provides comprehensive tooth extraction services according to your needs.

Simple Tooth Extraction

Impacted Wisdom Teeth Treatment

For a tooth that has come through the gum and is reachable with instruments. Carried out under local anaesthetic, usually in a single appointment, with most people back to normal activity within a day or two.

Dental Treatment

For teeth broken at the gum line, trapped beneath it, or with awkward roots. We plan the approach from your X-ray first, make a small opening in the gum, and use dissolvable stitches where they are needed.

When an infection cannot be cleared with root canal treatment, removing the tooth stops it spreading. We will talk through replacing the tooth once the site has healed.

Dental Treatment

Some braces and aligner plans need space created before teeth can move into position. We work on your orthodontic treatment plan and remove only what that plan calls for.

Gentle Tooth Extraction When You Need It

A damaged, decayed or infected tooth may need to be removed when it cannot be restored. Our dentists provide careful tooth extractions, explain your treatment options and guide you through recovery and aftercare.

Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

Some problems build slowly and others arrive overnight. Booking an assessment early usually gives you more options, including options that save the tooth.

Pain That Will Not Settle

A toothache that keeps returning, or that no longer responds to over-the-counter pain relief, usually means the problem has reached the nerve. An X-ray will show whether the tooth can still be treated.

Swelling Around the Tooth or Jaw

Swelling near a sore tooth often points to infection. Infections do not clear on their own and can spread into the surrounding bone and soft tissue, so this is worth seeing us about promptly.

A Cracked or Broken Tooth

A tooth that has fractured below the gum line often cannot be rebuilt. Removing it prevents the crack spreading and protects the teeth on either side.

A Loose Adult Tooth

Adult teeth should feel firm. Looseness usually means bone loss from gum disease, or damage from an injury or grinding. Depending on how much bone is left, the tooth may need to come out.

An Abscess or Ongoing Infection

A bump on the gum, a bad taste, or a deep throbbing ache can all point to an abscess. Root canal treatment clears many of these. Where it cannot, extraction is the way to stop the infection.

Crowding Before Orthodontic Treatment

Some orthodontic plans need one or more teeth removed to create room for the rest to move into line. Your dentist and orthodontic plan will determine whether this applies to you.

WHY CHOOSE HAYAT DENTAL

Why Choose Hayat Dental for Tooth Extraction?

Hayat Dental is a general dental practice in Ultimo & Chippendale, a short walk from Central Station and the University of Sydney. We handle extractions from straightforward removals through to surgical cases, plan each one using digital imaging, and put the cost in writing before you decide.

Experienced in Simple and Surgical Cases

Our dentists remove teeth regularly, including cases where the tooth has broken at the gum line or the roots are awkward. Where a case sits outside what is best handled here, we will tell you and arrange a referral.

Digital Imaging Before We Begin

Every extraction is planned from a digital X-ray, so we know the shape of the roots and what sits near them before we start. This is how we work around the nerve and sinus.

Same-Day Appointments When You Are in Pain

Dental pain does not keep office hours. We hold appointments back each day for urgent cases so you can be seen, assessed and made comfortable quickly.

Costs in Writing, No Surprises

After your consultation and X-ray you receive a written quote covering everything, with your health fund rebate applied. You will know the full figure before treatment begins.

How Tooth Extraction Works at Hayat Dental

We examine the tooth and take a digital X-ray to see the roots, the surrounding bone and anything sitting close by. This tells us whether the tooth can still be saved, and if not, whether removal will be simple or surgical.

We explain what we have found, what the procedure involves, and how long recovery usually takes. You receive a written quote with your health fund rebate applied, so you know the cost before you decide anything.
On the day, the area is numbed completely with local anaesthetic. We check it has taken effect before starting. `[CONFIRM: sedation options]` is available if you would prefer to be more relaxed.
For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened and lifted out. For a surgical extraction, we make a small opening in the gum and remove the tooth, in sections if needed, to protect the surrounding bone. Most appointments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the tooth.

We place gauze to help the clot form, fit dissolvable stitches if they are needed, and give you written aftercare instructions. We will also arrange a follow-up to check that the site is healing as it should.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction

We always take care of your smile

Tooth extraction at Hayat Dental is performed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort afterwards is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.

It depends on whether the removal is simple or surgical, which tooth it is, and how the roots are shaped. A simple extraction costs less than a surgical one, which takes more time and planning. After your consultation and X-ray, we give you a written quote covering everything, and we claim your health fund rebate on the spot through HICAPS. See our cost section above for what is included.

Most people are through the worst of it within three to seven days after a simple extraction. Surgical extractions usually take seven to fourteen days. Swelling tends to peak around day two or three and then eases. We give you written aftercare instructions and arrange a follow-up.

Dry socket happens when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged or breaks down too early, exposing the bone underneath. It usually appears as a deep ache two to four days afterwards. To reduce the risk, avoid straws, smoking, vigorous rinsing and strenuous exercise for the first 48 to 72 hours. If it does develop, contact us and we can treat it.

Stick to soft, cool food for the first 24 to 48 hours: yoghurt, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, soup that has cooled, smoothies without a straw, and ice cream. Avoid hard, crunchy, chewy and spicy food, and hot drinks. Return to your usual diet gradually as the site settles.

Not usually. Antibiotics are prescribed when there is an active spreading infection or a specific medical reason, not as a routine measure after every extraction. Your dentist will tell you if they are needed in your case.

Most private health funds cover extractions under general or major dental, though the amount varies by fund and policy. We claim on the spot through HICAPS so you pay only the gap. Eligible children may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
