Six crowns to replace stained, 15-year-old dental work

A man in his early 50s had old fillings, crowns and veneers that had lasted about 15 years but were now stained, dark and mismatched. He wasn’t in pain. He wanted his smile to look natural again.

01

The patient’s concern

Over the years he’d had a lot of dental work on his front teeth: fillings, crowns and veneers, most of it around 15 years old. It had served him well, but it had started to stain and darken, and the shapes and colours no longer matched each other.

He had no pain. He was still working, and his goal was simply a smile that looked natural and consistent again instead of a patchwork of dark and discoloured front teeth.

02

What we found

The old restorations had reached the end of their life for appearance: stained edges, darker teeth, and a mismatch of shapes and shades across the front of the smile.

One existing crown still blended well enough that he was happy to keep it. His natural tooth colour was good, so whitening wasn’t needed.

03

Our approach

Because the teeth being treated already carried large old restorations, replacing them with crowns gave one consistent colour and shape across the smile in a short course of treatment.

We only treated what needed treating. The crown he was happy with stayed, and we didn’t add whitening because his natural colour already matched the new work. Our aim is always the result the patient wants with as little treatment as possible.

04

The treatment plan

1

Assessment and plan

We checked each old restoration and agreed which teeth to treat and which to leave.

2

Removing the old work

The stained fillings, crowns and veneers on the teeth being treated were removed.

3

Six new crowns

Six crowns were made in one even colour and a natural shape, then fitted.

About 3 weeks from start to finish

05

The outcome

The dark teeth are gone. The colours and shapes across the front of his smile now match, and the result looks natural rather than ‘done’. Treatment took about three weeks from start to finish.

06

Looking after the result

Check-ups and cleans every six months

Brushing and flossing carefully along the crown edges, where plaque collects

Seeing us early if a crown chips or feels different when you bite

07

Cost and payment options

Fees depend on how many teeth are treated, the materials used and any work needed first. After your consultation you get a written treatment plan with costs, before anything starts, and nothing goes ahead until you are comfortable with the plan. Payment plans are available for cosmetic treatment.

Front teeth that look darker than the teeth around them

Old fillings or crowns with stained or dark edges

Crowns, veneers or fillings that no longer match each other

Dental work that is 10 to 15 years old or more

If a few of these sound familiar, a consultation is the best next step. We explain your options, including the smallest treatment that will do the job.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about this treatment

Can a discoloured front tooth be fixed with a crown?+

Often, yes, especially when the tooth already has a large filling or an old crown. A crown covers the whole visible tooth, so it can hide darkness that whitening can’t reach. If the tooth is mostly natural and healthy, whitening, bonding or a veneer may be enough, and we would suggest the smaller option first.

Why does old dental work go dark?+

Older tooth-coloured fillings and bondings absorb stain over time, and their edges can wear and discolour. Older crowns can also show a darker edge as the gums change. Fifteen years is a good life for this kind of work, but it doesn’t last forever.

Can whitening change the colour of crowns or fillings?+

No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth. That’s why we check your natural colour first. In this case it was already good, so no whitening was needed. When whitening is part of a plan, it is done before new crowns so they can be matched to the final shade.

How long does it take to replace old crowns?+

This case took about three weeks. Most crown work needs a preparation visit and a fitting visit. Your timeline depends on how many teeth are involved.
