A dental check-up is the examination. Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, wear or other changes, and talks through anything you have noticed yourself.
A clean, also called a scale and polish, is the treatment that follows. We remove the plaque and hardened tartar that builds up around the gumline, then polish your teeth so the surfaces are smooth.
You need both, and at Hayat Dental they happen in the same appointment. Most visits take around 45 minutes to an hour.
More than a clean
Regular visits bring assessment, cleaning and personal advice together.
Your dentist checks for cavities, gum changes and worn fillings, then explains what needs attention. Small cavities and early gum changes are usually simpler to treat when they are found early.
Professional scaling removes hardened tartar. Once plaque hardens into tartar, brushing and flossing cannot remove it. Polishing helps remove surface stains.
Your examination also includes your gums, tongue and soft tissues, with an oral cancer screening at every check-up.

We remove plaque and tartar using ultrasonic and hand instruments, then polish your teeth. Any need for deeper cleaning is discussed first.

Care for your gums
A routine scale and clean maintains healthy gums. Deep cleaning treats areas below the gumline when gum disease needs more than a standard clean.

Cost and health funds
A check-up and clean at Hayat Dental is $249 without a health fund. This covers your examination, scale and clean, polish, fluoride treatment and personalised advice, with X-rays when they are needed for your assessment.

If you have a suitable level of extras cover, your check-up and clean may be gap-free, depending on your fund and policy. We claim on the spot through HICAPS, and our team can check your cover before your appointment.

We accept all major health funds, including HCF, Medibank, nib, HBF and CBHS, and we are a CBHS Preferred Provider.

A standard check-up and clean usually includes item 012 (periodic examination), 114 (removal of tartar) and 121 (fluoride treatment), plus 022 when an X-ray is needed. You can give these numbers to your health fund to check your cover, and our team can confirm the exact items for your visit.

Eligible children may be covered for check-ups, cleans and X-rays under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. We can confirm your child’s eligibility before the visit.
