ASSESSMENT · OPTIONS · CARE

Choosing dentures for your needs

Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable appliance. A partial denture works alongside remaining teeth; a full denture replaces teeth in an upper or lower arch. The right plan starts with an assessment of your mouth and the teeth you still have.

  • Replace several missing teeth or a full arch
  • Review loose, worn or uncomfortable dentures
  • Plan tooth removal and replacement together

IS A DENTURE RIGHT FOR YOU?

When dentures may suit

Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable plate. Your dentist checks your gums and any remaining teeth first.

DENTURES MAY SUIT

01

Several missing teeth

A partial denture can replace teeth in different places.

02

All teeth in one jaw

A full denture replaces a whole arch.

03

A loose or old denture

A review can show whether a reline or new denture is needed.

CONSIDER INSTEAD

If you want something fixed

Your dentist will explain which treatment suits the problem.

One missing tooth

A single implant or bridge stays in place.

Dental implants

A fixed full arch

Implants can support a full arch that is not removed.

All-on-4 implants

A gap with strong neighbours

A bridge is fixed to the teeth either side.

Dental bridges

Teeth that may be saved

Some teeth may be kept with treatment.

Root canal treatment

UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Full and partial dentures

Your remaining teeth, gums, bite and preferences guide the design. We explain the practical differences before arranging the next steps.

denture full

An entire arch

Full dentures

A removable set of teeth for the upper or lower jaw when all teeth in that arch are missing.

Support
Rests on the gums and supporting tissues.
Fit
The shape of your mouth and saliva affect retention and comfort.
Care
Requires daily cleaning and regular checks of fit and oral tissues.
denture partial

Some missing teeth

Partial dentures

A removable appliance that fills gaps while keeping suitable natural teeth.

Support
May use clasps or other attachments to remaining teeth.
Fit
Design depends on the number and position of missing teeth.
Care
Clean both the appliance and the remaining teeth carefully.

Implant-retained dentures are another option for some people. They attach to implants but can still be removable. Suitability depends on your health, bone and treatment goals; surgery and additional maintenance are involved.

LOOSE OR SORE DENTURES?

A denture should be comfortable to wear

We review the fit, your gums and any remaining teeth, then explain the options.

HOW DENTURES ARE MADE

From impressions to fitting

Dentures are made for your mouth over several visits so the fit and bite can be checked.

01

Impressions

Moulds or scans record your gums and any remaining teeth.

02

Try-in

A trial denture lets you check the look and bite before it is finished.

Fitting and review

The finished denture is fitted and adjusted at follow-up visits.

WHAT TO EXPECT

From assessment to fitting

Understand the proposed treatment before you decide. Your visit is planned around the findings of your assessment.

01

Review your mouth

Assess gums, remaining teeth and your current denture if you have one. Discuss what you want to improve.

02

Plan the design

Compare suitable options, appearance, likely visits and fees. Any necessary dental treatment is planned first.

03

Record and check

Impressions or scans and bite records help make the denture. Trial stages may be used to review the teeth and fit.

04

Fit and adjust

Check comfort and your bite, demonstrate cleaning and arrange follow-up adjustments as needed.

AFTER YOUR VISIT

Same-day dentures: what it means

Your dentist’s personalised advice takes priority.

BEFORE REMOVAL

Plan in advance

Immediate dentures are prepared before planned tooth extractions so they can be fitted on the day teeth are removed.

DURING HEALING

Expect changes

Gums and bone change as the mouth heals. Adjustments, relining or a replacement denture may be needed.

AFTER FITTING

Build confidence gradually

Speech and chewing can take practice. Start with manageable soft foods and follow the personalised wearing instructions.

Same-day fitting is not the same as making a new denture at a first visit. Immediate dentures require advance planning and are not suitable for every person. Call for advice if a denture causes persistent soreness; do not adjust it yourself.

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Denture costs and ongoing care

Fees depend on the type of denture, materials, number of teeth and any extractions or implant treatment. Ask what fitting appointments, adjustments and later relining are included.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions,
answered.

How do I clean my dentures?+

Clean them daily using the method recommended by your dentist. A soft brush with mild soap or a suitable denture cleanser can be used; ordinary toothpaste may scratch the surface. Clean your gums and any remaining teeth too.

Should I sleep with my dentures in?+

Dentures are usually removed at night to let the mouth rest, unless your dentist has given different instructions, such as immediately after extractions.

Will my dentures always fit the same?+

Your mouth changes over time. A loose or sore denture should be checked; relining, adjustment or replacement may be needed. Do not use adhesive to ignore a poor fit.

How do dentures compare with a bridge?+

A denture can be removed for cleaning. A bridge is fixed in place and has different support and cleaning requirements. Suitability depends on the gap and surrounding teeth.
