CASE STUDY · IMPLANT, CROWNS AND INVISALIGN WITH SEDATION

An implant, crowns and Invisalign under IV sedation for a nervous patient

A corporate finance professional came to us with severely worn, sensitive teeth from grinding at night. His teeth had worn so short that they barely showed when he smiled, and a fear of needles had kept him away.

01

The patient’s concern

He came to us with severely worn, sensitive teeth from grinding at night. His teeth had worn so short that they barely showed when he smiled.

He was very anxious about needles, and that anxiety had kept him from getting treatment.

02

What we found

One tooth that had previously had root canal treatment was cracked and couldn’t be saved. The rest of the front teeth needed rebuilding, and the bite needed adjusting first so the new work would last.

03

Our approach

The biggest barrier was anxiety, so we planned the treatment under IV sedation with an anaesthetist. That let him have the work done comfortably instead of continuing to put it off.

Putting treatment off tends to make it more complex and more costly. Correcting the bite first with Invisalign meant the new crowns and implant would be protected from the forces that wore the teeth down.

04

The treatment plan

1

IV sedation

Treatment stages were carried out under intravenous sedation, so he could have the work done comfortably.

2

Invisalign

Nine to twelve months of Invisalign positioned the teeth and balanced the bite.

3

Extraction, bone graft and implant

The cracked tooth was removed, the site was bone grafted, and an implant was placed.

4

Front crowns and whitening

The front teeth were restored with crowns, and the other teeth were whitened to match.

About 12 months · Several stages, with IV sedation

05

The outcome

His front teeth are visible again when he smiles, the sensitivity has settled, and the missing tooth has been replaced with an implant. He completed treatment without the anxiety that had held him back.

06

Looking after the result

Wearing a night guard to protect the crowns and implant from grinding

Regular reviews of the implant

Wearing retainers as advised after Invisalign

07

Cost and payment options

A combined plan is priced stage by stage, so you can see what each part costs. After your consultation you get a written treatment plan with costs, before anything starts. Payment plans are available for orthodontic and cosmetic treatment, so the cost can be spread out.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about this treatment

What is IV sedation at the dentist?+

Sedation medicine given through a drip in your arm, so you are deeply relaxed and remember little of the procedure. At our practice it is given with an anaesthetist. Lighter options, such as nitrous oxide (happy gas), suit milder anxiety.

What happens if I keep putting off dental treatment?+

Problems usually grow. Delay can turn a small repair into a larger one, raise the cost, and sometimes mean losing a tooth that could have been saved. Seeing us early keeps treatment as simple as possible.

Why straighten teeth before crowns?+

If the bite stays unbalanced, the same forces that wore the teeth down will act on the new crowns. Balancing the bite first helps the new work last.
