CASE STUDY · SMILE MAKEOVER
A woman in her mid 20s didn’t like her smile but wasn’t sure why. Her front tooth, which had had a root canal, was getting darker. She also had misaligned, chipped and discoloured teeth she hadn’t noticed.

01
She didn’t come in for anything specific. She just didn’t like her smile and couldn’t say exactly why.
The one thing she could point to was her front tooth. It had had a root canal and a bonding, and it was getting darker over time.
02
Looking at the whole smile, there was more going on than the dark tooth: teeth that were out of position and misaligned, chipped edges, discolouration of other teeth and inconsistent shapes.
03
She was very young, so we didn’t want to be aggressive with any tooth adjustments. She didn’t want veneers or crowns across her smile, and she didn’t need them.
The plan was to get the foundations right first by moving the teeth into position with Invisalign, then improve colour and shape with the least invasive options. The only tooth we cut was the one that had already had root canal treatment.
04
1
Invisalign
Clear aligners corrected the position of the teeth and set the foundation for everything else.
2
Teeth whitening
Whitening made the colour of her natural teeth consistent.
3
One crown
A single crown covered the dark, root-canal-treated front tooth.
4
Edge bonding
Small bondings repaired the chipped edges of other teeth.
15 to 18 months in total
05
Her teeth are aligned, the colour is even, and the dark front tooth now blends in. Matching a single crown to natural teeth is harder than matching several, but the colour match here is close because the crown was made after whitening.
No other teeth needed to be cut, which protects her natural teeth for the future.
06
Wearing retainers as advised after Invisalign
Top-up whitening when needed, as natural teeth can darken while the crown keeps its colour
Regular check-ups to look after the bondings
07
A combined plan is priced stage by stage, so you can see what each part costs. After your consultation you get a written treatment plan with costs, before anything starts. Payment plans are available for orthodontic and cosmetic treatment, so the cost can be spread out.

You don’t like your smile but can’t pinpoint why
A front tooth that has darkened after a root canal
Chipped edges or teeth slightly out of line
Wanting to avoid veneers on healthy teeth
If a few of these sound familiar, a consultation is the best next step. We explain your options, including the smallest treatment that will do the job.
This summary is based on the treating dentist’s account of the case. Every mouth is different, so your options, timing and costs depend on your own assessment.
COMMON QUESTIONS
A tooth that has had root canal treatment no longer has a living nerve, and changes inside the tooth can darken it from within. Whitening the outside doesn’t always reach it. Options include internal whitening, a veneer or a crown, depending on how much healthy tooth remains.
Moving teeth into the right position first means less tooth has to be shaped later. Sometimes it means crowns or veneers aren’t needed at all.
Yes, with careful shade matching, though a single crown is harder to match than several. Whitening first, as in this case, lets the crown be made to match your final tooth colour.
A staged plan that combines treatments such as aligners, whitening, bonding, crowns or veneers to address several concerns at once. The aim is the smile you want with the least treatment.
