CASE STUDY · SMILE MAKEOVER
A woman disliked the mismatched colour of her bonded front teeth, how dominant they looked, and a gap showing in her lower teeth. The cause was a reverse smile arc.

01
Her front two teeth had old resin bondings, which made them look brighter than the rest. She didn’t like the mismatch in colour or the shape of her teeth, and felt her front two teeth were too prominent and dominant in her smile.
She also didn’t like that a gap showed in her lower teeth when she smiled.
02
One lower incisor was small and peg-shaped, which left dark gaps around it.
The lower teeth showed so much because she had a reverse smile arc. Instead of the top teeth following the curve of the lower lip, they curved the opposite way, so too little of the top teeth and too much of the bottom teeth showed.
03
She had been expecting to need veneers on all her front teeth. Our approach was to fix position first, so that very little tooth would need preparing.
A short course of aligners moved the teeth roughly into place. That left only the front two teeth, which already had old fillings, needing crowns to correct their length and shape. The other teeth were whitened and bonded instead of being covered.

1
Aligners
About six months of aligners improved the position of the teeth so less preparation would be needed.
2
Two crowns
The old fillings on the front two teeth were removed and crowns restored their length, shape and colour.
3
Whitening and bonding
The other teeth were whitened, and small bondings refined their shape.
7 to 8 months · No veneers needed
05
Her smile arc is no longer reversed and now follows her lower lip, the front teeth are in proportion, and the colours match.
She avoided veneers on all her teeth: the plan needed just two crowns, on teeth that already had old work.
06
Wearing retainers as advised after aligners
Regular check-ups, including a look at the bondings
Top-up whitening when needed
07
A combined plan is priced stage by stage, so you can see what each part costs. After your consultation you get a written treatment plan with costs, before anything starts. Payment plans are available for orthodontic and cosmetic treatment, so the cost can be spread out.
08
Front teeth that look brighter or bigger than the rest
More of your lower teeth than your upper teeth showing when you smile
Gaps around a small or pointed tooth
Being told you need veneers on many teeth
If a few of these sound familiar, a consultation is the best next step. We explain your options, including the smallest treatment that will do the job.
This summary is based on the treating dentist’s account of the case. Every mouth is different, so your options, timing and costs depend on your own assessment.
COMMON QUESTIONS
When you smile, the edges of your top teeth should follow the curve of your lower lip. In a reverse smile arc they curve the other way. Tooth position, wear or old dental work can cause it, and it often means the lower teeth show more than the top.
A tooth that is smaller and more pointed than usual. It can leave gaps beside it. Bonding, a veneer or orthodontics can improve how it looks.
Not always. Aligning the teeth first can reduce or remove the need for veneers. This patient needed just two crowns, on teeth that already had old fillings.
