CASE STUDY · SMILE DESIGN AND VENEERS

Four veneers for short, worn and discoloured front teeth

A professional woman in her late 40s had short, worn front teeth with old resin fillings that had darkened and started to chip. She wanted her smile to look consistent again, without losing healthy tooth.

01

The patient’s concern

Her main concern was how her front teeth looked. They had become discoloured, short and worn, and old composite resin fillings were showing up as dark patches that were chipping away at the edges.

She wanted a refresh: a more consistent colour, shape and surface texture across the front of her smile.

02

What we found

Her gums and oral hygiene were in good shape, so this wasn’t a hygiene problem. The wear came from grinding and from older fillings reaching the end of their life. The edges of the old resin were visible and stained, and the front teeth had lost length.

03

Our approach

We didn’t want to cut away more tooth than necessary or weaken healthy tooth structure. She wanted an aesthetic correction, so we chose a conservative option: veneers, thin facings bonded to the front of the teeth.

Veneers on the front four teeth could correct colour, length and shape with very little reduction of the natural tooth. We value getting the result with as little work as possible, using the most conservative option that will do the job.

SMILE DESIGN FIRST

Before any tooth was changed, we designed the new smile and showed it to the patient. They could ask for changes, and if they didn’t like it, they didn’t need to go ahead. The design also shows us how little of each tooth we need to adjust.

04

The treatment plan

1

Smile design and trial

New tooth shapes were designed and tried in so she could see and approve her new smile first.

2

Preparation

The four front teeth were gently prepared, removing very little tooth.

3

Fitting

Two weeks later, the four veneers were bonded in place.

About 3 weeks · 3 appointments

05

The outcome

The four front teeth are now even in colour, length and shape, with a smooth, consistent surface. The dark, chipped edges of the old fillings are gone, and very little natural tooth was removed to get there.

06

Looking after the result

A night guard is usually recommended where grinding contributed to wear

Regular check-ups and cleans

Avoiding biting hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails

07

Cost and payment options

Fees depend on how many teeth are treated, the materials used and any work needed first. After your consultation you get a written treatment plan with costs, before anything starts, and nothing goes ahead until you are comfortable with the plan. Payment plans are available for cosmetic treatment.

08

Is this similar to you?

Front teeth that have become shorter or flatter over time

Old tooth-coloured fillings with dark or chipped edges

A history of grinding or clenching

Wanting an even colour and shape without crowns

If a few of these sound familiar, a consultation is the best next step. We explain your options, including the smallest treatment that will do the job.

This summary is based on the treating dentist’s account of the case. Every mouth is different, so your options, timing and costs depend on your own assessment.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about this treatment

Do veneers damage your teeth?+

Veneers need some preparation of the tooth surface, but much less than a crown. In this case very little reduction was needed, because the smile design showed exactly how much each tooth needed to change. Some cases need no preparation at all. We will tell you what applies to you.

Can veneers fix short, worn front teeth?+

Yes, when the tooth underneath is healthy. Veneers can add length back to worn edges and even out shape. If grinding caused the wear, we also plan how to protect the veneers afterwards.

What is a smile design?+

A preview of your new teeth before treatment. We plan the shapes, then you can see and trial them so you approve the result before anything is changed. It also tells us how little tooth we need to adjust.

How long does it take to get veneers?+

This case took about three weeks over three appointments: smile design, preparation, then fitting two weeks later.
