Sedation can make a long or complex dental appointment much easier to get through. At our Sydney clinic, only minutes from the CBD, we go through the sedation options at a consultation, assess whether sedation is suitable for your medical history, and give you a written treatment plan with full costing before anything is booked.

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help you stay calm and relaxed while dental treatment is carried out. It is not the same thing as local anaesthetic, and the two get confused constantly. Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and the gum around it so the area does not hurt. Sedation works on how you feel during the appointment rather than on the tooth itself, and it makes a long procedure pass far more easily. In some cases, sedation may also be considered when emergency dental treatment is needed for a patient who is extremely anxious about treatment. In most cases, the two are used together, so the area is numb and you are relaxed at the same time.
You may also have seen dental sedation called sleep dentistry, twilight sedation or conscious sedation. Those terms get used loosely online, and they do not all mean the same thing. With conscious sedation, you are still breathing for yourself and still able to respond, even though you feel deeply relaxed and may remember very little afterwards. Being completely unconscious is a general anaesthetic, which is a different procedure carried out in hospital by a medical anaesthetist. Part of our job at your consultation is to tell you honestly which of these your situation actually calls for.
Which option suits you depends on what needs to be done, how long it is likely to take, and your general health. We work through all of this with you at your consultation rather than deciding it for you.

Local anaesthetic is the standard approach for most dental treatment and is often all that is needed. The area is thoroughly numbed before treatment begins, while you remain fully awake and in control. You may still feel pressure, movement or vibration, which is normal and not the same as pain. The treatment area should remain numb throughout. Most patients can drive themselves home afterwards and continue with their normal day.

IV sedation is given through a small cannula in the arm or back of the hand. It may be suitable for longer or more involved treatment, or for patients who find dental treatment difficult to tolerate. You remain conscious and breathe independently, but feel deeply relaxed, and many patients remember very little afterwards. IV sedation is not carried out at our Sydney clinic. If appropriate, we will discuss it with you and explain how it can be arranged.

For some patients, general anaesthetic in a hospital or day-surgery setting may be appropriate, particularly when treatment is extensive or several deeply impacted teeth are involved. Under general anaesthetic, you are fully unconscious during the procedure. It may also be considered when treatment cannot be comfortably completed while you are awake. This is not carried out at our clinic. If appropriate, we will explain why and how it can be arranged.
Sedation is worth discussing at your consultation if any of this applies:
Sedation is not suitable for everyone, and that is a clinical decision rather than a preference. Pregnancy, some heart, lung and airway conditions, certain medications, a previous reaction to sedatives, and some sleep-related breathing problems can all change what is safe for you. We take a full medical history first, and if we do not believe sedation is appropriate, we will tell you and talk you through the alternatives.
You do not have to commit to treatment to have the conversation. Book a consultation at our Sydney clinic, tell us what treatment you are considering, and we will explain which options are realistic for your situation and exactly what each one involves.
Sedation is not tied to one procedure. Patients raise it most often for:

Where it suits you, we plan treatment so more can be completed in a single longer appointment rather than asking you to come back again and again.
Our clinic is a short walk from Sydney CBD, Ultimo, Haymarket and UTS, with buses and light rail at the door, which matters when someone else is bringing you home.
Hayat Dental welcomes patients from Broadway, Ultimo & Chippendale and surrounding Sydney suburbs.
Dental sedation is well established and generally very safe when the right patient has been properly assessed beforehand. Our dentist in Sydney will discuss your health, medications and individual circumstances before treatment. A great deal of that safety comes down to preparation, so a few things matter more than most people realise:
Side effects after sedation are usually mild and short-lived, such as drowsiness, mild nausea, light-headedness or a headache. Individual responses vary. If anything concerns you afterwards, call us on 02 9030 0247.

We discuss sedation at your consultation and recommend the option that suits your treatment and your medical history. Some options are carried out here, and some are better arranged elsewhere; we will tell you plainly which applies to your case before anything is booked. Call 02 9030 0247 if you would like to talk it through first.
Not in the way most people picture. With conscious sedation, you are breathing for yourself and able to respond, even though you feel deeply relaxed and may remember very little afterwards. Being completely unconscious is a general anaesthetic, which is done in a hospital rather than at a dental clinic. If you have read that sleep dentistry means being unconscious in a dental chair, that is not accurate.
Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and gum so the area does not hurt. Sedation changes how relaxed and aware you feel during the appointment. They do different jobs and are usually used together, so the site is numb and you are relaxed at the same time.
After treatment under local anesthetic only, yes, most people drive themselves home. After sedation, no. Your written instructions will tell you how long to avoid driving, riding and operating machinery, and whether you need someone to take you home and stay with you. Follow what you are given rather than estimating it.
Fasting is usually required before IV sedation, and you will be given exact instructions on how long beforehand to stop eating and drinking. It is a safety requirement rather than a formality, so if you have eaten when you were asked not to, tell us and the appointment will be rescheduled rather than going ahead.
Dental sedation is well established and generally very safe for suitable patients who have been properly assessed. That safety rests on an accurate medical history, correct patient selection, appropriate monitoring, and following the preparation instructions you are given. It is exactly why we take a full history first and will decline sedation where we do not think it is appropriate.
Sedation is generally avoided during pregnancy. Tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be, or are breastfeeding, and we will plan your care around that. Urgent dental problems can usually still be treated safely, and leaving an infection untreated is often the greater risk.
Pain control comes from the local anaesthetic rather than from the sedative. Sedation makes a long appointment far easier to get through, and most patients recall little of it, but the numbing is what stops the tooth from hurting. The two are used together for that reason. If you feel anything during treatment, tell us, and we will stop and address it.
Cover varies widely between funds and levels of cover. We claim on the spot through HICAPS and will give you the item numbers in your written quote so you can check your entitlement with your fund before you book.
Children are usually managed with a gentle, unhurried approach and clear explanation rather than sedation. Where a child needs more than that, treatment is generally best carried out in a hospital setting. Talk to us about your child, and we will tell you honestly what we think is appropriate. Eligible children may also be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
